Android Froyo’s Google IO keynote shows what Android could to do to Singtel, M1 and Starhub

I had a blast watching this keynote as a geek. The next iteration of Google Android Operating System for Smartphone shows what an open platform can achieve compare to a relatively closed platform like iPhone.

This is the full length Keynote. Do watch it.

Now what you would notice most in the middle of the keynote at 15 mins to 35 mins (fast forward near to there) is that there are alot of functionalities that is so much better than the iPhone

  1. Android Intent pushinig a message from your web service to your phone (unlike iPhones push notification)
  2. Over the internet App Downloads compare to downloading to iTunes and syncing via cable
  3. Over the air auto update of Apps
  4. Streaming music from your desktop over the internet to your phone
  5. Buying music in the Android Desktop internet web store and gettting it over the internet

Here are what i think might happen:

  1. There will be more Android Smartphones in Singapore. They will form with iPhone to be dominate handset market.
  2. iPhone might follow Android’s lead here with over the internet sync and access to data.
  3. On the current 1mBPS handphone plan costing $36-$40 this will be rather slow. People who love these service may choose to move to a higher data speed plan. This will increase the ARPU for these range up by $5
  4. The increase in data usage will likely means added pressure on M1 , Singtel and Starhub’s network.

I cannot believe they got free smartphone at the keynote!

You are right. Now Android has more than 50% market share and the most popular application in Singapore, ShowNearby was invested by Global Yellow Pages.

I suspect there will be more and more such penetration and that will really shake up the Telcos here.

Will the telcos embrace developing their own handsets like how T-Mobile and Vodafone do it?

they probably won't. singapore's telco market mechanizm is different. the ARPU should rise but the revenue from voice will be receding. so will the positive outweight the negatives? that is the question.

i think this release of Android Froyo is huge. The developers will be happy. and with that we can start imagining really great apps on this platform.

Just a side-tracked comment..I think google is just a company that everyone loves to love. Their philosophy of win-win and "free" business model is intriguing. To a large extent, it undermines what the business world has been employing for decades...rather than cut-throat competitiveness....they can be co-operative and still achieve results.

Apple now has an uphill task of not just fighting against google..but all other mobile phone manufacturers employing android in their phones.
