James Bianco posts 4 rather nice charts depicting whether there are out performance by choosing stocks who consistently raise dividends for a long number of years.
It seems that there aren’t.

wah hi Jared, you long time haven't come liao.
gotta present both sides of the coin, but if you pick stocks individually you may be able to find those taht can outperform in both situations. this article make a good case of investing in the SDY or VIG ETFs versus the SPY.
