Living with iMoats: Do you give ang bao during Chinese New Year even if you are unmarried?

So its Chinese New Year time! Long Working break and a lot of nice foodie!

I hope you all rest well but don’t over eat as it put stress on the waist line and health.

I was talking to my friend Ah Wei and he told me that un-married folks like me should not need to give Ang Bao.

Granted the Ang Bao I gave is to my parents and elderly  as a mark of taking care of me and as a token of appreciation, but what I would like to know is that is it common to give Ang Bao when you are un-married?

I gave ang pows to my nephews cause my mother is demented and so I represent her and gave ang pows to them. If I am the boss in a company, I would hv follow tradition and give ang pows too though I am single. I enjoy giving ang pows

I am with AK71 :) You're the man AK!

I've delivered sofas and furniture (I am working as retail sales but during peak period I helped out the delivery team) before many years ago... You will be surprised how many people treat us as "invisible". Not even an offer of a drink!

It's good sometimes to forget "rules" and "expectations".

Give with the heart; not what's expected of us.

Hi Drizzt,

I think it's okay to give to elderly and parents. The real meaning of giving ang pao is to give good fortune to the receiver. I think anyone can give it regardless of one's marital status :)

I do give to my parents on special occasion, like CNY and new year. Oh, and birthdays.

Hi La papillion, Gong xi fa cai, I am just not sure if this is a prevailing trend. Do you have any idea how the younger generation take to this culture of giving?

Hi Drizzt,

For 3 years now, I have been giving red packets during CNY to the security guards and cleaners who work at my condo. I also give a tip when I pay my bills at restaurants during CNY. The tip is in a red packet. Usually, I don't tip. :)
