The Free Stock Portfolio Tracker Updates with Google Sheets

If you want to aggregate your stocks, bonds or other investments in one place, you might have come across my Stock Portfolio Tracker. Go on and give it a try. It’s FREE and won’t cost you money and you can tweak it to your hearts content. Its embedding my current portfolio updating the price in real time.

Around sometime last year, Google decide to do one round of upgrade for their Google Sheets, Document and Presentation. What happens is that it doesn’t affect your old documents but that, if you create your documents on new platform they have the new functionalities, if you have them on an old platform they still have the old functionalities.

The portfolio tracker is still based off the old Google Sheets, but I have been experimenting with the new one.

As we get to the tail end of 2014, Google have indicated that they will be updating the old workbooks to the new one.

The reason I did not swing over was that some of the functionalities was still not done up yet. However, since Google won’t be going back, I decide to update the links to the new Google Sheet.

For those of you on older Stock Portfolio Tracker, I am not sure how Google will upgrade the sheets. I believe there should be little hiccups so you don’t have to do much.

You can  read more here, what is supported and what they are removing:

Upgrading older spreadsheets to new Google sheets

A great performance improvement

What can we look forward to?

For one thing, the performance improvement is immense.  In the old stock portfolio tracker, there are some advance formulas. The stock portfolio tracker calculates everything on the fly.

You won’t notice much of a difference but, if you have a 600 row transactions sheet like mine, you will realize it is crawling.

I am happy to say that the new one is much much better. It very much feels more like how Excel will feel.  If there needs to be some calculation in the background, you will see a progress bar.

I am sure you will enjoy it.

There are some good improvements listed out:

So go on give it a try if you have not. I am sure you will enjoy having a portfolio that you can check here and there, and not have to update prices. If you are new to online spreadsheets or are on Microsoft give it a try. I seldom use Office nowadays.

Greetings; Thanks for the sheet; I was wondering if there was a way for the transaction section to auto update the company name when it changes?

Hi Sansa,

I took a look at my sheet and although its on the old Google Sheets format it looks ok. Perhaps you can share with me your sheet at [email protected] so that i see what is wrong.
